LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The Las Vegas City Council will soon discuss selling a city-owned golf course so it can be turned into affordable housing.
The agenda for Wednesday's council meeting includes discussion for a possible resolution on the sale of Desert Pines Golf Course in east Las Vegas.
Local and state officials have long envisioned turning Desert Pines into a new housing development to help with Southern Nevada's real estate crunch. The resolution states the city council agrees to sell the golf course at below-market value and without offering it to the general public.
According to the proposal, the Desert Pines Redevelopment Project would feature a mix of affordable housing units, single-family and townhomes, a recreation area, and commercial amenities.
The Nevada State Infrastructure Bank approved $25 million in financing for the first phase of the project last fall. That money will go to the non-profit Urban Strategies in partnership with developer McCormack Baron Salazar.
Total project costs are expected to reach $450 million, and the first phase of development alone is estimated at $57.3 million.
The city of Las Vegas owns Desert Pines, though it is operated by a third party.
