New Center Is Part Of The Historic Westside School Campus
The city of Las Vegas and College of Southern Nevada will cut the ribbon to open the new Historic Westside Education and Training Center at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27. The new training center is located at 1099 C St. on the Historic Westside School campus.
Mayor Shelley Berkley and Ward 5 Councilwoman Shondra Summers-Armstrong will be joined by Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor Matt McNair, College of Southern Nevada (CSN) President Stacy Klippenstein and U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto for the ribbon-cutting. Councilwoman Summers-Armstrong represents the Historic Westside.
The 15,000-square-foot training center will house CSN staff who will provide credentialed job training programs in advanced manufacturing, health care, technology and construction trades. The training programs are focused on key high-demand, high-wage industries that will provide participants with pathways directly into career fields and align with college degree programs.
“Investing in education is investing in our future and this center will focus on careers in advanced manufacturing, health care, technology and construction trades,” Mayor Berkley said. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the Historic Westside and the entire community, thanks to the efforts of the College of Southern Nevada, the city of Las Vegas and our federal delegation.”
The $16.4 million training center is partially funded by a U.S. Economic Development Administration grant, and the contractor is Builders United.
“Bringing access to higher education into the Historic Westside creates opportunities for people who wouldn’t have them otherwise,” College of Southern Nevada President Klippenstein said. “We’re proud to partner with the city of Las Vegas on this game-changing project. This center is more than a building; it’s a new workforce development tool that will help people receive higher wages and add to the economic growth in the Historic Westside.”
“The Westside Education and Training Center creates a new pathway for Ward 5 residents to train in multiple career fields and be a part of the community we are building,” Councilwoman Summers-Armstrong said. “I want to thank all our partners who have made this project a priority and I can’t wait to welcome in our first students.”
"Supporting workforce training uplifts our youth, provides valuable resources to jobseekers and primes the Nevada economy for growth in the years to come,” Senator Cortez Masto said. “For years, I have been working with the City of Las Vegas to push for this investment in the Historic Westside, and I am so excited to see all the good that the Westside Education and Training Center will do for the entire Las Vegas community.”
