LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The North Las Vegas City Council has approved five grants totaling $622,798 to bolster the city’s Police Department’s special operations and community safety programs.
The decision, made on Wednesday, aims to enhance public safety through various initiatives.
“I would like to commend our grants director, Leslie Nix, and her team for always searching for appropriate grants to help support every department, and we’re grateful for these grants that strengthen our Police Department’s ability to keep our community safe,” said Scott Black, North Las Vegas Mayor Pro Tem.
The newly approved grants are designated for several key programs, including $82,798 for the Violence Suppression Unit to provide services to victims, $125,000 for the NLVPD Corrections Division Substance Abuse Program, and $300,000 for special events and participation in the Joining Forces program, which addresses traffic issues such as distracted driving, speeding, and seat belt enforcement.
Additionally, $100,000 is allocated for DUI enforcement events, and $25,000 for construction zone safety events.
“These grants reinforce the vital partnerships between local law enforcement and state safety agencies in promoting safety, security, and resilience within our community,” said Chief of Police Jacqueline Gravatt. “Grant funding for public safety and supportive services for the vulnerable enables the North Las Vegas Police Department to continue and enhance its work to keep the community safe.”
The City of North Las Vegas applies annually for these competitive grants. Since the last fiscal year, the Police Department has been awarded more than $5.2 million in grants for training, reintegration programs for offenders, and community safety events.
