LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — New housing units designed for veterans have been unveiled in North Las Vegas, offering a much-needed solution amid the region’s affordable housing crisis.
The units, constructed by Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada with a $1 million grant, are part of a gated community and aim to provide veterans with accessible and affordable living options.
Bob Cleveland, CEO of Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada, highlighted the urgency of the housing shortage. “There was a 60,000 unit shortage and now there is an 80,000 unit shortage,” he said. Despite the daunting numbers, the organization is committed to finding solutions.
The newly constructed units include a three-bedroom, three-bathroom home, and two additional units with two bedrooms and two baths each. These homes are strategically located near charter schools, grocery stores, and healthcare facilities.
Typically, such units would rent for $2,500 to $3,000, but eligible veterans will pay between $1,600 and $1,800, with veteran benefits covering part of the rent.
Melissa Weinberg, Board President of Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada, emphasized the significance of these homes. “These new units represent more than a place to live. This is representative of dignity, opportunity, and respect. This is also promised that we will not leave our veterans behind,” she said.
The organization plans to build eight more units, aiming for a total of 11 affordable homes for veterans by the end of the year.
The current three units are still available, and interested veterans can apply through the nonprofit’s website.
