Nevada’s political musical chairs: Kasama seizes opening after Seaman takes Trump position

Victoria Seaman’s exit creates opening for conservative candidates

Nevada News and Views

Here’s a story that shows how quickly things can change in Nevada politics. It all started when Republican Las Vegas City Councilwoman Victoria Seaman pulled out of her race for Clark County Commission. She took a new job with the Trump administration in Colorado. That one decision set off a chain reaction that’s still playing out.

Seaman had been the presumed Republican frontrunner against Democrat incumbent Justin Jones in District F. Her exit left Republicans scrambling to fill a winnable seat. It also left Democrats wondering if they should challenge Jones in their own primary.

Why This Matters for Limited Government Folks

County commission seats control billions in taxpayer dollars. They make decisions about property taxes, business regulations, and how much red tape small companies have to deal with. When these seats flip from big-spending Democrats to fiscal conservatives, it makes a real difference for working families.

The Clark County Commission has been dominated by Democrats for years. Republicans see this as their best chance to flip a seat and bring some balance to local government spending decisions.

The Domino Effect Begins

Political insiders say Seaman’s departure caught everyone off guard. She was seen as the Republican most likely to beat Jones, partly because she had strong name recognition and fundraising ability.

Her exit meant other Republicans who might have waited their turn suddenly saw an opportunity. It also meant Democrats who were afraid to challenge Jones in a primary started having second thoughts.

This is how politics really works behind the scenes. One person’s decision creates opportunities and problems for dozens of other candidates and their families.

Enter Assemblywoman Kasama

That brings us to yesterday’s big announcement. Assemblywoman Heidi Kasama jumped into the county commission race. She brings serious fiscal credentials as a former certified public accountant and small business owner.

Kasama said in her announcement: “It has been a profound honor to serve my constituents in the Nevada Assembly, where I have successfully passed common-sense legislation to cut red tape, support our workforce, and protect property rights.”

She added: “As a former accountant, I see the reckless spending and lack of accountability that burdens taxpayers. We need a commissioner who scrutinizes every dollar, supports our small businesses, and prioritizes the core services that moderate and keep our communities safe and prosperous.”

I’m running for Clark County Commission to bring public safety, economic opportunity, and total transparency to our community. As a business owner and former accountant, I’ll fight for the good-paying jobs and accountable government our families deserve.

Kasama’s Strategic Shift

Sources had told reporters in May that: “Assm. Heidi Kasama (R-Las Vegas) is strongly considering running for state treasurer — an open seat.”

But Seaman’s sudden departure appears to have changed those calculations.

Kasama brings serious fiscal credentials as a former certified public accountant and small business owner. Her decision to target the county commission instead of state treasurer shows how Seaman’s exit reshuffled the entire political landscape.

The Opposition’s Challenge

Democrats face their own tough choices. Incumbent Justin Jones has had his share of controversies. Some in his own party wonder if he’s the strongest candidate they can field.

Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager was reportedly considering various races depending on how the Republican field shaped up. Now he and other Democrats have to decide whether to challenge Jones or look for other opportunities.

This shows how one candidate’s decision ripples through both parties. Politics really is like a chess game where moving one piece affects everything else on the board.

What Happens Next

The filing deadline is still months away, so more changes could be coming. But right now, fiscal conservatives have a clear choice in Kasama.

The question is whether limited-government voters will turn out for a county race. These local elections often get decided by just a few hundred votes. That means individual participation really matters.

What Conservatives Should Do

Pay attention to county races in your area. These officials make decisions that affect your property taxes, business regulations, and quality of life every single day.

Get involved early. Volunteer for candidates you support. Talk to neighbors about local issues. Most people pay attention to presidential races but ignore the local elections that actually have bigger impacts on daily life.

Most importantly, vote in every election. County races are where your single vote has the most power to make a difference.

This whole situation shows that politics is unpredictable. One person’s career change can create opportunities for fiscal conservatives to make real progress at the local level.
