LAS VEGAS, NEV (July 25, 2025) - A six-year-old girl who has been fighting a life-threatening nervous system disorder since she was 19 weeks old, recently received a much-needed reason to smile, thanks to Make-A-Wish Nevada and Martin-Harris Construction.
For Hazel Mitchell of Las Vegas, the wish for a bathroom makeover with an accessible shower became a reality.
The room was revealed at a Make-A-Wish celebration at Mitchell’s home. The new bathroom features a large, accessible shower and a wide entrance that can accommodate a wheelchair.
For Mitchell, who relies on a ventilator, oxygen and a wheelchair to help her through daily life, everyday activities like entering and exiting a shower have become impossible, particularly as she gets older and bigger.
A non-verbal child who is home-schooled, Mitchell’s medical treatments consist of occupational, physical, music and speech therapies. Throughout her short life, she has endured numerous surgeries, including G-tube placement and a tracheostomy in addition to surgery to reduce brain swelling.
Despite all her challenges, Mitchell is a happy, content little girl with remarkable strength of character. She loves playing Candy Crush with her mom and often can be found in her family member’s arms, a place where she feels the safest.
Commenting on the wish reveal, Elizabeth Ortiz, project engineer with Martin-Harris Construction said: “When we received the call from Make-A-Wish Nevada that Hazel needed a bathroom remodel for an accessible shower, Martin-Harris rallied the troops and got to work! We were determined to make her wish come true, so we recruited some of our favorite partners including ACC Plumbing, Acme Flooring and Western Partitions, Inc. Seeing this wish come true was such a special moment. Hazel’s smile is the best and most beautiful thing imaginable. I don’t always get to interact with the wish kids and families – this is the best part of the job.”
"A wish creates an immediate turning point in a child's life, and partnerships like the one with Martin-Harris Construction not only allow us to stretch our resources further, they create a lasting positive impact on wish children and their families,” said Scott Rosenzweig, President and CEO of Make-A-Wish Nevada. “As always, we are grateful to our longtime partnership with Martin-Harris Construction that is always ready to help our wish kids live better lives.”
