Commissioner Jones, Clark County Public Works hosted ribbon cutting celebrating completion of Cactus Avenue Project

Clark County Commissioner Justin Jones and Clark County’s Public Works Department hosted a ribbon-cutting and traffic signal activation ceremony celebrating the completion of the Cactus Avenue improvement project in the southwest Las Vegas Valley and the addition of a new traffic signal Buffalo Drive. The ceremony was held at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, July 17, starting with the activation of the traffic signal in the northeast corner of Buffalo Drive and Cactus Avenue. After the commissioner flipped the switch to activate the new signal, there was a ribbon cutting to celebrate the opening of Cactus Avenue. That event took place about 1,000 feet away at a new bridge on Cactus Avenue that was built over a wash as part of the project.

“Completion of this phase of work on Cactus Avenue is a milestone for residents throughout the Las Vegas Valley,” said Commissioner Jones, whose Commission District F includes the project. “Cactus Avenue is now a fully improved roadway stretching about 10 miles from Spencer Street on the east side of the Las Vegas Valley all the way to Fort Apache Road in the southwest. It allows for better connections to communities in southwest neighborhoods to and from the Henderson area.”

The $19.9 million project transformed Cactus Avenue between Fort Apache Road and Buffalo Drive from a one lane road in each direction that stopped at the wash into fully paved roadway with two lanes in each direction and a bike path. Improvements along the roadway include the installation of storm drain improvements, curb, gutter and sidewalks and sidewalk ramps, utility adjustments and the addition of new streetlights. The installation of the four-way traffic signal at Cactus Avenue and Buffalo Drive also is part of the project in addition to the bridge. Work on the project started in April 2023. The contractor for the project was William Charles Inc.
