LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Throughout the valley, efforts to boost pedestrian safety are underway, with Clark County installing another crosswalk in a busy area near the Las Vegas Strip.
Kourtney Birton lives right around the corner from Convention Center Drive near Las Vegas Boulevard and said that before the crosswalk was added, it was always a gamble trying to cross the street.
“You’re always having to dodge the cars and time it out the perfect way, so having this crosswalk is a much-needed change,” Birton told 8 News Now.
While the crosswalk isn’t finished yet, it comes at a time when the need for more across the valley is evident. Nevada Department of Public Safety reported 162 fatalities this year, with 115 of those being in Clark County.
That is a decrease of 9.5 percent compared to May of last year.
As for pedestrian deaths, Clark County has seen a total of 40 so far, with 46 reported across the state as of May. The most recent reports from June have yet to be released.
Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom shared with 8 News Now that while pedestrian fatalities continue to be an issue across the valley, he is glad to see Clark County focused on steps that make road crossings safer.
Moises Perez, who is an avid walker, is taking full advantage now that the crosswalk is almost complete, noting how busy it gets with all the tourists and convention goers.
“People are trying to come in and out, especially during popular conventions. If it’s helping to better the community and making sure everyone is staying safe, then it’s great,” he added.
