LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Another courthouse could be coming to downtown Las Vegas.
Clark County’s chief judge, Jerry Wiese, says the community needs more judges, which would require more space. “We’ve been negotiating with the county for probably the last year as far as adding a new building, a south tower to the regional, regional justice center here.”
Wiese went before Nevada lawmakers to ask for more judge positions in Clark County, but did not get any.
Clark County District E Commissioner Tick Segerblom said he plans to start discussions on the courthouse during a July 15 County Commission meeting.
“If you look at the filings, the fines are up, they’re continually up, and it’s inevitable,” Segerblom said. “So let’s try to get ahead of the game.”
Segerblom said on top of the need for new judges, the population is growing and there’s the question of bringing family court to downtown Las Vegas. The heart of the city is crowded, but there is already a piece of county land in mind on Bonneville Avenue and 3rd Street.
Segerblom said it will be years before any construction starts. He wants to form a committee to hear input.
“To me, if we can spend several hundred million for a football stadium, several hundred million dollars for a baseball stadium, several hundred million for the airport, then we could spend several hundred million dollars for a courthouse,” Segerblom said. “That’s the key to a, you know, justice system and a democracy.”
